Charcoal
by: Trailhawk

I agree with the Kingsford charcoal, I have used a lot of other brands and the heat consistancy is just not there. I buy both kinds of the Kingsford charcoal, the briquetts and the pure wood lump charcoal. I like starting out with the lump coal, it heats up real quick, and then I add the briquetts to keep the heat going. I can add some of the lump coal to get my tempurature up where I need it to be. I have tried other lump coals and they just don't last nearly as long as the Kingsford brand. I don't USE any charcoal fluid, or charcoal that contains easy lighting ignighters, I don't want to ruin the taste of the meats. I know I sound like a Kingsford Rep. but I'm not! I just like the fact that I can start my smoker, throw my brisket, ribs, pork loin. steaks, etc.. and not have to worry about checking on my heat as often, I know what to expect when I use the charcoal of my choice. Good luck to your grillin adventure, keep the coals hot and the smoke rollin'.

Charcoal Varieties

Choosing the best charcoal depends on what you are using it for. First, you can usually depend on name brand charcoals having consistent burn qualities from bag to bag. Cheap, bargain charcoal has a tendency to vary, even within the same brand. If you need long burning, even heat, briquettes are best, in my opinion. Good quality briquettes, like Kingsford, burn pretty clean and for a long time. If you want a lot of heat for direct grilling steaks, good lump charcoal will burn hot and fairly quickly.
