best way of measuring smoker temperature

We recently purchased a CB600X Gas Charbroil Smoker. My husband loves it with the exception of the temperature gauge. He set it a 225 degrees but I think it was actually higher inside and the meat came out on the dryer side.

Now, the question is, how do we better measure the temperature inside the smoker?

Thanks for your help, GG

Thanks for the comment. We will give the termomether potato solution a try. Seems like nothing it's quite as easy as we think and smoking can be more troublesome than happy; I suppose it's all about perseverance!!! :-)

Two soulutions, one:get a replacement thermometer for the unit(a good after market like Tru-Temp.) or 2. a probe thermometerlike the Polder(sold at Target,Bed Bath and Beyond, and other stores.Place the probe through a potato(all the way)and lay it on the cooking grill.Double coverage is best though, get both and use the probe in the meat to keep an eye on Internal Meat Temp.
Hope this helps and SMOKE HAPPY ;}-
