Brine AND marinade inject a turkey?

by Amber
(Texas)

I've smoked my turkey for several years now always using a brine beforehand. This year, I'm going to try out a marinade injector on the smoker. My question is do I still need to brine the turkey beforehand or skip that step and just marinade inject then smoke??

Not sure if it matters but I'll be using a charcoal upright smoker with a water pan.

Brining & Injecting a Turkey

You can do both, but be aware of the total amount of salt you're putting into the turkey. A standard brine recipe has all the salt a turkey needs, so if you use a marinade that has very little or no salt in it, you'll be fine. I just brined a turkey, then injected it before smoking, using a combination of unsalted butter, orange juice, and a few non-salty spices (onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper). That one turned out really good.

So the main thing to watch out for is oversalting your bird.
