Checking Temperature in Cookshack smoker

I own a Cookshack II 008 smoker 1999 model.
Is the only way to tell the temperature in the oven,to put the thermometer in the oven and open the oven when you want to see the temp.? Or does a person have to insert a thermometer through the smoke release opening?

You should be able to use a Maverick type temp. gauge and just let the cookshack door close on the cord.
