Hickory wood using shag bark hickory

I have about 6 shag-bark hickory trees in my backyard. I did some trimming and now have hickory chunks. Is there a difference in hickory wood and should I let it cure before using in my smoker. A friend also told me that the peeling bark is great for smoking. Have you ever used the bark alone? Doesn't seem it would last very long.

HOW CAN I BUY SOME SHAG BARK HICKORY NEW

I love barbecue burgers with shag bark hickory in the grill. We used to break off pieces from a tree we had and oh boy were those burgers good. The best! The processed chips they sell in the grocery stores are can not be compared with the ones you get straight off the tree. Is there anybody out there that knows where to get some hickory that comes straight off the tree?

There is a difference but nothing unpleasant. Dry vs. aged is a debatable question. The old-time pit masters often insisted on freshly felled wood to cook a whole hog. My advice is use what you've got. As for the bark, yep it wouldn't last long. Interesting aside, the bark is sometimes used to make a rather bitter syrup, similar to maple syrup.
