How to dry woods for smoking

by Scott
(Winston-Salem, NC)

I recently cut some limbs from our cherry tree. It's one of these - http://www.arborday.org/TREES/treeguide/TreeDetail.cfm?ID=9 . A flowering cherry tree that produces no fruit.

Can I use this for smoking? If yes, how should I dry the wood? I was thinking of just placing it in the garage until it was dry and then cutting it up for the smoker.

Using Flowering Cherry for Smoking
by: Bill

Yes, flowering cherry is good for smoking meats. To dry it, just let it sit for a few months outside. Keep it up off the ground, and where air can circulate around it easily. A sunny spot will accelerate the dry rate.

I would recommend that you peel off the bark before using the flowering cherry for smoking.
