Looking for accurate digital meat thermometer

I have been having disapointing results with "stay in the meat while cooking" digital thermometers.

They continually under-temp, resulting in over cooked meat.

I do not know the brand I have tried because I threw it away out of frustration. I purchased it at Lowes for 9 bucks.

I like the idea of a thermometer I can read without constantly opening my smoker which results in longer cooking time.

Last weekend I smoked a turkey and the blasted thing read 139 degrees in the breast. I compared it to my old fashioned reliable dial type thermometer and it read 180 !!!

I keep the probe away from bones and have had the same disapointing results when probe is placed in the thigh.

This has been a problem with other meats as well like pork butt.

Do you recommend a reliable digital thermometer ?

Accurate Remote Digital Thermometers
by: SmokerBill

I've had good luck with the Maverick Smoker Thermometer. It's accurate, and has the added feature of having dual probes...one for the meat and another to monitor the temperature of the smoke chamber.

I've also had good success with a much less expensive single probe thermometer I picked up at Wal-Mart for about $15. It's accurate and dependable, and even has a wireless remote that I bring inside with me.

I suggest that the next one you get, try a side-by-side test of the new one alongside a known, accurate thermometer. Bring a pot of water to boil, watching to see if the new thermometer matches the reading of your accurate one. If it's off, take it back and try something else. Or just give the Maverick a try.
