Mountain Mahogany For Smoking

by ksallmen

I'm a native Sierra Nevada boy. Nothing compares to the unique flavor "Mountain Mohogany" provides for anything smoked. Is there anything native in the state of Colorado comparable?

Mountain mahogany grows all over colorado. You just have to find it! Look at elevations around 6000-9000 feet and near oakbrush (gambels oak) and sometimes around Juneberry (also known as serviceberry). These three plants all grow in the same areas. Also, if you're in bear country that's a little dry, look for your mountain mahogany.

According to Wikipedia, the alderleaf variety of mountain mahogany grows in the foothills regions of Colorado.

However, I don't know if it's suitable for smoking.
