Multiple Boston Butt Smoking Time

by Todd
(O'Fallon, IL)

I am preparing to smoke two Boston butts. They will be smoked in one torpedo - top rack and middle rack. I have prepared my rub and they are marinating in the frig as I speak. I will also be utilizing water to keep the butts tender. From different posts and reading, I will need to smoke the butts between 1 and 1.5 hours per pound, depending on the heat I smoke at.

My question is, since I am utilizing two butts, that are 6.5 - 6.9 lbs each, do I base my time for smoking on just the 6.5 - 6.9 or do I need to base my time on the total amount (approx 13.4 lbs)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Smoking Time For Multiple Pork Butts
by: SmokerBill

When smoking more than one Boston butt, or multiples of any types of meat, base the total smoking time needed on the individual cut's weight, not the total weight of the meat added together. With your pork butts weight 6.5 and 6.9 pounds, your estimated smoking time would be between 7 to 10.5 hours, at 225-240 degrees Fahrenheit. That's based on the time it would take for the largest of the two butts- (I'd round the 6.9# butt up to 7#)

7# X 1 = 7 hours
7# X 1.5 = 10.5 hours

To preheat the smoker more quickly, add very hot water to the water pan, and then to help maintain the temperature when adding additional water, refill with hot water, too. Also, for more even cooking, place the butts on opposite sides of the smoker.
