Rudy's

My wife and I were driving through Texas and saw this Gas station / BBQ joint and had to stop. It turned out to be some of the best BBQ we have ever eaten and have returned every time we are near a Rudy's in Texas or New Mexico. Wish they would put one in Arizona. We would eat there regularly.

I work in Austin, Rudy's is 1000 yards from my office but I'll drive to Lockhart, Taylor, Driftwood, Elgin before I eat at Rudy's. Their slogan is "The Worst Barbeque in Texas". They're not kidding.

I had heard good comments on Rudy's near Austin so when they opened one up in Frisco TX, I made a bee line as fast as I could. I should have stayed home.
I love pork ribs. What can be better than fallin off the bone ribs? Well, apparently they don't serve those here. They serve pork jerky on a bone.
What a huge disappointment.

I am a BBQ snob. I live in Oregon, but every time I happen to be in Texas, I eat plenty of BBQ. So, I try to go to the really good places like Louie Mueller or Kreuz. Those are all an hour away from the city, but totally worth it in my mind. But if you don't want to go all the way out of town, Rudy's is a really great choice. I usually order moist brisket and turkey with sides of creamed corn and beans, and they're all good. Rudy's isn't legendary gourmet, but it's very good and very convenient.

I first discovered Rudy's in Albuquerque, NM and it was love at first smell. Their brisket is some of the best that I've ever eaten and they have a jalapeno sausage that will knock your socks off. They are no-frills...stand in line, grab your side dishes, belly up, order your meat, white or wheat, sissy sauce or regular?...ready to go! I have two sons who live in or around Tyler, TX and they tell me that the Rudy's there sells a highly customizable breakfast burrito that I'm going to have to try the next time I'm there. It was not mentioned but Rudy's makes the best potato salad I have ever had. Everyone I have served it to loved it. Their creamed corn is also extremely good and rich.

Don't miss the opportunity if it arises to try Rudy's.

If anyone knows how to make their potato salad I would appreciate learning how.
