Smoked Turkey in a Brinkmann Propane smoker

My friend bastes his turkey with the juices from the water pan of his Brinkmann propane smoker. Is this a good idea?

using water pan juice for basting

I don't see any major problem with that, as long as the liquid in the water pan hasn't scorched or burned. However, I'd prefer to use a basting liquid with more flavor, usually some beer or juice with some dry rub mixed in.
