Lilac -- like the bush?
by: Anonymous

I live in Colorado, so am always searching for native wood that I can use. We don't have a lot of variety when it comes to hardwood.

I have a Lilac bush in my back yard that needs trimming often. Is that what you mean by "lilac" on your list?

Discovered Aspen a while back. Tried it because the wood is rather sweet if you chew on it. Stronger flavor than I expected, but good. And it burns easy, so I usually mix it in with other stuff when I start to get the fire going.

Using Choke Cherry for smoking
by: SmokerBill

Yes, you can use choke cherry. I haven't tried it yet, but I do have access to a couple of trees. If it's a relative of the true cherry (pie cherry or sour cherry) tree, it should be good. Cherry makes good smoking wood.

Other woods? There are plenty.

Oak, just about any type
alder
ash
cottonwood
aspen
hickory
walnut
pecan
cherry
peach
pear
apple
plum
mesquite
mulberry
sugar maple
lilac
orange
grapevines
guava
hackberry
willow
olive
crabapple

And I know there are many more, I just rattled off what I could remember.

WOODS NOT TO USE - UNSAFE SMOKE WOODS
elm
sycamore
cypress
any of the evergreen/soft woods
pine
cedar
spruce
