Smoking with coffee beans

by Eric Schramm
(Willingboro, NJ)

On Iron Chef America recently they had coffee beans as the theme ingredient and the Iron Chef used them in a stove top smoker. Could that actually work in an electric smoker? I have seen people suggest using sawdust in electric smokers, would that translate into coffee grinds (unused of course) or even cocoa powder for a different flavor?
Thanks for your help

Bitter

I'd stay away from cocoa powder. It's high in fat and alkaloids and probably would give off a very, very bitter smoke. Ever smell burned brownies? Yuck.
