Storing a smoked Boston butt in the refrigerator

by Julie
(South Carolina)

I am picking up a fully cooked smoked Boston Pork Butt on Friday. How long will it last in my fridge before having to be thrown out? Can I freeze it and reheat it at a later time? Thank you!

Refrigerating Smoked Boston Butt
by: Bill

If the smoked Boston butt you're picking up Friday was smoked on that day, it will be safe to eat for four days if refrigerated the entire time. If you don't think it will all be eaten in that amount of time, go ahead and freeze the excess. It can be kept in the freezer for up to six months (at zero degrees or lower), and can be reheated in the oven whenever you want.

The following is an excerpt from the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Smoking Meat and Poultry page:

"Refrigerate meat and poultry within 2 hours of removing it from a smoker. Cut the meat or poultry into smaller portions or slices, place it in shallow containers, cover, and refrigerate. Use it within 4 days or freeze for later use."
