Time-per-pound for smoking tri tips

by Ted Smith
(Grayslake, IL)

I picked up some good tri tips from a local butcher ~3 lbs per, ~3" thick. Any rough rules of thumb on the length of time per pound?

I have Brinkman that I just converted to an electric (I know, another charcoal purist has lost his way).

Although I have not measured it, I thinks it's running about 200 degrees F when it sits for an hour or better.

I do have two racks and the water pan.

What is a beef tri tip
by: Anonymous

A beef tri tip roast is cut from the the bottom sirloin. It's a pretty lean piece of meat, so it's best cooked no more than to medium.

It generally takes me about an hour and twenty minutes to two hours at 225 to get the tip upto 150 degrees at which point I yank them and let them rest for 30 minutes before cutting into them.
