vertical charcoal smoker temperature problem

by Dan
(Bowling Green, Ohio)

I have a vertical charcoal smoker that I have an extremely hard time getting the temperature above 150 degrees. I have used it twice. The first time was an 8 lb. pork butt and the second time was a 6 lb. brisket with 2 small chickens. I use plenty of charcoal briquettes along with smoking chips. I have had the vent holes in every combination of open and close but the temperature will go no higher than 150 degrees and that is for only 1/2 hour at best. What do I need to do.

Same Problem

I am new to smoking and I have an entry level Brinkmann Vertical smoker. I have the exact problem. No matter what configuration of vent placement I try, the temp will not go higher that 150 Deg. I dont know what else to try, but the only advise I seem to get is people telling me to get a better grill. Any ideas???

Dan, It would help to know what kind of smoker you have. I use a WSM and don't have those issues. Usually you leave the top vents open all the way and adjust temp by using the bottom vents. Sounds like you could be choking your lit charcoal too.
