If you put the woodchips directly on the heating element, you'll probably shorten the life of the element. If you can place the chips next to the element, on the lava rock(which is OK), you'll be fine.
You have some easier options for adding wood to your electric cooker. You can wrap the chips in foil, shaping the packages so they fit on the lavarock without touching the element. Or you can use a small tin can to hold the chips.
